• 6th World Water Forum side event of “Time for Solutions” at the Suntec Convention Center during the Singapore International Water Week (SIWW)

Dr. Eun-Kyung Park, President of the Korea Water Forum and Dr. Sophie Nguyen-Khoa, Regional Process Coordinator of the International Forum Committee Secretariat

On Tuesday afternoon, July 5th 2011, the 6th World Water Forum held a side event of “Time for Solutions” at the Suntec Convention Center during the Singapore International Water Week (SIWW).

Loic Fauchon, President of the World Water Council, started the session by introducing current water-related issues. He then explained why under such a complex context urgent actions need to be taken in the international stage and how the World Water Council and World Water Forum played important roles in exchanging solutions for sustainable development.

Prof. Benedito Braga, the President of the International Forum Committee and Vice-president of the World Water Council, explained the theme of the 6th World Water Forum - “Time for Solutions”- including the logics (priorities > targets > solutions > commitments > actions), four processes (thematic, political, regional and grassroots and citizens), as well as the methodologies of SMART Targets (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-bound) and WISE Process (Wide-Involvement Stakeholder Exchanges). He also briefed about the organization structure and general map of the 6th Forum.

After Prof. Benedito Braga, Dr. Eun-Kyung Park, President of the Korea Water Forum and Chair of the 6th Forum Regional Process Commission, presented the Regional Process with the focus on the Asia Pacific Region.  Dr. Park briefed about the structure and roadmap of the Regional Process and then explained how two streams of the 2nd Asia Pacific Water Summit and the 6th World Water Forum work together. She also introduced the key partners, milestone meetings, and specific regional priorities in Asia Pacific.

At the end, Dr. Sophie Nguyen-Khoa, Regional Process Coordinator of the International Forum Committee Secretariat, presented the 6 ways to contribute to and participate in the 6th World Water Forum (shown as follows):

    1. Join a World Water Forum working group
    2. Contribute with a solution
    3. Propose a project to have institutional supports
    4. Organize a side-event at the Forum
    5. Come to the exhibition
    6. And appoint people and institutions to the Water Prizes !

The event was concluded with a Q&A session where participants raised questions and gave comments. For example, Ravi Narayanan, the Vice Chair of Governing Council at the Asia Pacific Water Forum, suggested that the 6th World Water Forum should maximally fit into the regional agenda and workflows so that the streams of APWF and 6th World Water Forum can converge rather than being parallel. Prof. Benedito Braga answered questions and promised that more information, such as the design of the Forum, will be clear by the end of August at the Stockholm Water Week.
