How much do we understand (and need to understand) ecosystem functioning?
How can we identify the most appropriate methods to value ecological services?
These questions and many more will be discussed on Sept. 30th in Brussels, during the conference organised by Onema and European Commission: "Implementation of the WFD (Water Framework Directive): when ecosystem services come into play"
Though not explicitly mentioned in the Water Framework Directive (WFD), ecosystem services appear as a promising concept to help its implementation. The concept is based upon the assumption that there is a connexion between good ecological status and the realisation of several benefits, such as water supply, food, biodiversity, landscape value etc, which we are beginning to collectively call ‘ecosystem services’.
This conference intends to gather scientists, front-runner policy makers and those who ‘bridge’ the two communities in order to share a common view on the links between the ecosystem services concept and the WFD. It aims to explore how the ecosystem services approach can help highlight benefits (social, economical, environmental) from the WFD and boost political levers for the implementation of the WFD.
