• The UN reinforce the human right to safe drinking water and sanitation

    03 November 2011

Approximately 884 million people lack access to improved water sources and more than 2.6 billion people do not have access to improved sanitation as defined by the World Health Organization and the United Nations Children’s Fund. Moreover, every year, approximately 1.5 million children under five years of age die and 443 million school days are lost as a result of water - and sanitation - related diseases.

During its 18th session, the Human Right Council adopted a resolution reinforcing the human right to safe drinking water and sanitation. It calls upon States to promote at all levels the full realisation of this right in forthcoming national, regional and international initiatives.
