Meeting for Water Solidarity in the Rhin-Meuse basin

In keeping on with the preparatory process of the 6th World Water Forum, Time for Solutions, which will be held in Marseille 12 to 17 March 2012, the “Grassroots and citizenship” commission is labelling the Rhin-Meuse agency for organising the “Solidarity Meeting for Water in the Rhin-Meuse Basin” which will take place on 20 June 2011, at the Metz Centre Pompidou in Metz.

This meeting will be presided by Claude Gaillard, President of the Rhin-Meuse basin committee. It will gather together 200 actors in the water field, elected representatives of local communities and members of non-profit organisations. The conference is in the line of the process initiated in Istanbul in March 2009 and relayed via local communities the world over, to improve water management and sanitation, by way of the “Istanbul Water Consensus for local and regional authorities”.

The meeting’s purpose is to inform communities of the Rhin-Meuse basin about the possible actions and financing processes for projects in relation with access to water and water sanitation for the world’s less-favoured areas. It also aims to convince new project initiators.

In 2010, another thirty solidarity projects for water supply and wastewater sanitation were supported by the Rhin-Meuse agency, who also devoted over a million euros to actions for water in sub Saharan Africa, Madagascar, Haiti, Laos, etc.

The law of 9 February 2005, also called the Oudin-Santini law, authorises water agencies to carry out actions of international cooperation in the field of water, and to bring technical and financial help to local communities and non-profit organisations.
