A message from Nathalie Kosciusko-Morizet, French Minister of Ecology, Sustainable Development, Transport and Housing

19 October 2011

As Minister of Ecology of the host country, I wish the Forum of Marseille to focus on concrete solutions enabling rapid progress in terms of access to water and to sanitation.
I also wish that commitments are taken by the different categories of stakeholders to ensure that progresses are achieved.

The debates and outcomes should be guided by certain principles:

  • Efficiency requires that all involved parties are closely associated not only in the management of water in general but also in the preparation of the Forum.
  • The role of local authorities is essential to improve access to water and sanitation. Good quality water has a considerable impact on human health.
  • The protection of water resources is an obligation for all of us, both in terms of quantity and of quality.
  • Finally, by strengthening transboundary cooperation around a shared resource, we contribute to peace.

The mobilisation of all the stakeholders and their participation in the Forum will be the guarantee of the progress of these principles, at the service of humanity.

Nathalie Kosciusko-Morizet
Minister of Ecology, Sustainable Development, Transport and Housing
