34 projects and events certified World Water Forum 2012 as of June 8th by the Grassroots and citizenship commission

The commission for «Grassroots and citizenship» is supporting 34 events or projects through an official ‘6th World Water Forum’ labeling (download the Labeling charter.)

Created to ensure the rooting of the 6th World Water Forum in local realities and to develop citizens’ contributions for water, this local commission – driven by its president Martine Vassal, and by Vice-President, Hachmi Kennou – has up to now certified one project out of three. Indeed, to date, over 120 proposals have been studied by the “Grassroots and citizenship” board.

These are in line with the 2012 forum theme, Time for Solutions, and its 12 priorities and reflect its mission of awareness and education.

A third of these projects are international, another third is national and finally the last third is local, in or around Marseille. Extremely diversified, these projects can be educational, cultural, artistic, sportive, technical, industrial or economic. They come from a variety of sources: associations, public or private organizations, non-governmental, academic institutions as well as social networks or ‘think tank’.

The majority of these events and projects are dedicated to the public at large and many of them involve or target the youth. Half of these projects, 17 out of 34, involve concrete or prospective solutions for water access, distribution, treatment or management. The forum and the topic of water have also attracted the artistic community with 16 projects out of 34. Public officials and representatives of local authorities are also directly involved in 11 projects or events.

These projects may take several forms:

  • - Communications actions, especially the following approaches: Visit/Discovery/ Festival/ Conference/ Exhibition/Cultural events… etc.
  • - Projects which promote : culture and youth locally ; the wide range of know-how nationally ; and, internationally, trans-border relations and the the right to access water.

The actions should answer to the following criteria:

  • Take place at the latest in March 2012
  • Enable the mobilization of all the water players and other sectors directly concerned (agriculture, energy, industry…) at local, regional and international level
  • Encourage the participation of the citizens in the venues where they take place
  • Not have as main aim the promotion of a commercial product or service
  • Valorize today’s existing know-how at local, national and international level
  • Contribute in a consistent way to the promotion of the 6th World Water Forum: the forum of solutions and commitments.

Priority will be given to those proposals which satisfy most appropriately the spirit of the 6th Forum:

  • The search for and emphasis on solutions in liaison with the themes chosen by the Forum organizers: in line with the 12 themes in the 3 strategic orientations developed by the forum;
  • The promotion of the Forum through the use of events of pedagogical and citizen actions and the mobilization of the population;
  • The use of events with limited means to mobilize the greatest possible number of people;
  • The enhancement of the commitment to find solutions.
